Screeching sirens. Glaring lights. Foul odors. Is your life a cry from a Zen–like serenity? You’re not alone. We live in a noisy bright and at times, very smelly world. And little jolts to the primary senses -sight, smell, taste, touch and hearing -can add up to BIG-time tension.

We tend to pick up stress all day long through our five senses. Subtle assaults on the senses can cause our stress level to continually mount.

Fortunately, finding relief can be as simple as replacing nerve-jangling stimuli with soothing views, tones, aromas and flavors. Here’s what experts recommend avoiding and adding for tranquility.

SIGHT

The eyes are windows to our world, so it’s only natural that what we see can trigger tension. And not just obvious sights: deep, intense colors, bright lights and disturbing images – whether a violent television show or an upsetting picture can stress your body.

The antidote is to surround your self with cool colors, in particular, sky blue, which has been shown to trigger the release of tranquilizing hormones, soft lighting and nature scenes. Watching clouds blow gently across the sky or looking at a big, leafy tree can have a wonderfully calming effect. Closing your eyes and visualizing it will work too.

Stressors to try and avoid:Harsh lighting

Bright, warm colors in heavy saturation (tomato-red, brilliant yellow, fluorescent orange)

Rooms with many colors or patterns

Nature pictures with dark clouds, lightning, shadows, snakes or spiders

Images that bring on feelings of fear or anxietySoothers:

Cool colors like blue, green or violet in pale hues

Earth tones like sand, beige, brown

Dim lights or candles

Peaceful vistas in the great outdoors (billowing clouds, lush trees, shimmering lakes)

Pictures involving greenery and water

Aquariums and fountains

SOUND

Perhaps nothing makes us feel crazed as quickly as noise pollution. Whether from construction sites, trash collection, car alarms or ringing cell phones, the clamor of everyday life can set our teeth on edge – making minor troubles seem like major catastrophes. The body can suffer too. Auditory overload causes the body to react with muscular tension, which can turn in muscle spasms and a headache.

Escaping to a quite place is one way to find sound sanity. Another is by listening to music, which can lower pulse, blood pressure and muscle tension. Researchers attribute the power of music to it rhythmic component, which helps promote steady breathing and thus relation.

Stressors to try and avoid:

Loud, shrill noise (sirens, car alarms)

Ongoing clamor (blaring televisions, loud restaurants)

Dramatic water sounds (crashing waterfalls, pounding surf)

Threatening animal sounds (barking dogs, growling tigers, buzzing bees)

Music you don’t likeSoothers:

Slow, instrumental music

Music with pleasant associations (your favorite song, first dance at your wedding)

Calming nature sounds (babbling brooks, chirping birds, light rain fall)

Total silence

TASTE

Our favorite meals and snacks are called comfort foods for a reason. Part of the calming effect is psychological: certain foods can bring forth memories of a favorite place or person from our past. While smell and flavor play a role, tactile sensations in the mouth also contribute to how a specific food makes us feel. Because the tongue has touch receptors, as well as taste buds, the texture of food can contribute to our mood. Not surprisingly, soft treats are more soothing to the tongue than crunchy morsels.

Of the four major flavors (sweet, sour, salty, bitter) most people prefer sweets when tension peaks, particularly chocolate. Chocolate’s, soothing effect is probably due to the combination of two highly pleasurable sensations; the silky feel of fat and the lusciously sweet taste. Plus, scientists have discovered that chocolate contains Phenyl ethylamine (PEA), a natural mood elevator. PEA acts on the pleasure centre of the brain, reducing pain and anxiety. Conversely a sour candy or spicy foods can aggravate anxiety.

Stressors to try and avoid:

Hot, spicy foods

Pungent flavors

Burned coffee

Sour or bitter tasting foods

Foods with unpleasant associations (veggies you were forced to eat as a child, food that made you sick)Soothers:

Favorite childhood foods

Creamy treats (like pudding, mousse and ice cream)

Foods with high fat content

Sweets, especially chocolate

TOUCH

It’s all too easy to take our sense of touch for granted however, the skin is the body’s largest organ with sensors on every square inch. While some kinds of touch; being jostled on a crowded bus or the feel of a scratchy sweater can make us anxiety or irritable, getting rubbed the right way can melt away tension. Studies show that massage slows the heart rate, reduces blood pressure and decreases stress hormones. The good news: it doesn’t have to be a professional massage. Any kind of touch involving pressure will cause stress levels to drop.

Moreover, if the person laying on hands is a loved one, so much the better. Sometimes there’s nothing like a squeeze, hug or cuddle from a family member or close friend to restore a feeling of tranquility. Physical connections to special people in your life provide a sort of shield against everyday tensions. Affectionate touch can convey love, empathy or trust. And that’s a powerful stress reducer.

Stressors to try and avoid:

Rough, scratchy fabric

Tight or uncomfortable clothing

Uninvited touch (rubbing shoulders in a crowded room, being shoved around in a busy subway or line)

Exposure to cold water or air (cold creates tension)Soothers:

Soft fabric (silk, cashmere)

Loose or very comfy clothes

Massages

Warm baths or showers (warmth is associated with comfort

Petting an animal

SMELL

The next time you’re feeling over whelmed, stop to smell the roses -literally. Long dismissed as the basest of all senses, smell may actually be the most powerful. That’s because our sniffing sense is directly linked to the limbic system, the part of the brain where emotion and memory are centered. Smell is our most emotional sense and the one with the longest memory. Just one whiff of a scent from the past can bring forth a flood of feelings and vivid memories. In fact, humans are able to distinguish over 10, 000 different odors.

But that’s not always a good thing… Unpleasant smells tend to increase agitation and anxiety. On the other hand, certain scents can be calming. Lavender especially has been shown to be a relaxing scent. But if you don’t like a particular aroma, it won’t make you feel relaxed. Personal preference, as well as odors you were exposed to as a child, play a big part in a scent’s therapeutic effect.

Stressors to try and avoid:

Disturbing odors like garbage, manure and vomit

Body odor

Overly strong fragrances

Spoiled food

Diesel exhaust

Musty smells

Ammonia (studies show that smelling ammonia elevates blood pressure)Soothers:

Scents like lavender, jasmine, sandalwood, rose, vanilla, green apple

The aroma of baked goods

The scent of fresh flowers

Any fragrance that’s associated with pleasant memories

An overload of unpleasant sensations can take a toll on the body and psyche. How do you know if you are becoming over-whelmed? Watch for these warning signs:

Muscle tension and or headache

Inability to concentrate and or focus

Feeling angry or irritable for no apparent reason

Extreme anxiety or a panic attack

Rapid heart rate

Ringing or buzzing in the ears

Watery eyes or needing to squint

A decreased taste sensation

Whether it’s one pet peeve or a variety of annoyances that sets you on edge, identifying and then avoiding them will definitely help your stress levels. Additionally, identifying your senses — soothers and using them whenever possible will not only help to reduce your stress levels but can help to soothe your body, mind and spirit… anytime!

By: Doreen Cook

About the Author:

It may feel to many of us that we can do little at this point in time to help create peace in the world. However, by just being conscious of our thoughts we might, indeed, be able to move ourselves and the rest of the world just a little bit closer to this goal. We can find peace if we only become conscious of where we place our attention.

As the great Rebbe Nachman taught, “You are wherever your thoughts are. Make sure your thoughts are where you want to be.” I heard this same teaching in metaphysical circles many years ago expressed in a slightly different manner: Thoughts are creative. What we think about expands. Our thoughts attract what we want, which most recently has been called the Law of Attraction.

In other words, if we spend much of our time watching the news of war and terrorism and if we focus most of our attention on the lack of peace and joy in the world, we will find ourselves experiencing more war, terrorism, sorrow, and suffering. However, if we force ourselves to focus on that which brings us joy or makes us feel peaceful, we will find ourselves increasing our own joy and peace. In addition, the more joyous and peaceful our thoughts are – and, in turn, we are, the more positive energy we send out into the world. Our manner of thinking, therefore, becomes a form of “tikkun olam,” which in Hebrew means a way to heal or fix the world.

If enough of us focus our attention on joy and peace, maybe, like the 100th monkey, we can cause others around the world to experience more joy and peace. According to the story, one monkey learned to wash its potato in water before eating it and then taught others to do the same. When the metaphorical 100th monkey began washing its potato in the water, the rest of the monkeys suddenly began doing so. As if traveling in the collective monkey unconscious, this behavior jumped across the ocean and other monkeys in other places began washing their potatoes as well.

It seems we don’t need everyone to change to create change on a larger scale. We just need enough people to change. Imagine, you could be the “100th” human to transform your consciousness and create a critical mass, a metaphysical and spiritual quantum leap! And, “abracadabra,” world peace would become a reality.

By: Nina Amir

About the Author:

Does world peace seem like a fantasy? What is the number one obstruction to world peace? How can we overcome such a powerful obstruction, with Yoga? Does Yoga meditation give us the answer?

The ego is the largest obstruction to world peace. One person’s ego can affect the collective consciousness of an entire country and the world. Consider history’s most famous conquerors and tyrants; their personal ambitions became an excuse to justify sacrifice, cruelty, and warfare.

What starts out as a personal matter can become a social dilemma, if one person has the influence, and an ego, which is out of control. Each of us has an ego, but we often ask others to put their egos aside before we do. We are right and they are wrong. We imply that they should listen to our side of the debate first.

How is it possible to restrain the ego? How can Yoga help control the Ego?

Yoga is designed to take care of the health of a single person. In many ways, Yoga travels to the core of the human mind, body, and spirit. One method allows an individual’s mind to be isolated through Yoga meditation practice. Yoga meditation allows the mind to withdraw from the “pains and aches of society.”

What do I mean by the pains and aches of society? Unfortunately, no society is perfect. Speak to any social worker about poverty and injustice. Each social worker receives a “bird’s eye” view of social injustice. Over the years, I have taught many social workers in my Yoga classes. It is apparent that they came to Yoga class as a sanctuary.

Why would social workers need a Yoga class for sanctuary? Social workers feel empathy, without ego, and they want to make a positive difference in modern society. They clearly see social illness, and inadequacy, on a daily basis.

How else could Yoga meditation overcome the ego? The mind withdraws from society, distractions, and multi-tasking, which forces the mind to look at itself. Yoga meditation is a systematic healing process for the individual and a remedy for society’s short comings.

In a recent conversation with a Yoga teacher, he mentioned how Yoga meditation is considered, by the public, to be “time spent doing nothing.” He completely understood the deeper value and benefits of meditation, but was concerned about how to reach his Yoga students, with overactive minds. After all, most of them would rather perform asanas than spend time meditating in a Yoga class.

The answer is: We will have to educate them, wait for them to age, or wait for the time, when they can appreciate the meditative aspects of Yoga. If Yoga students were trained to meditate as children, they would appreciate the many benefits of Yoga meditation at this moment. However, we cannot force a person to instantly meditate and “see the light.”

In order for meditation to take place, the mind must be willing to look at itself. When the collective consciousness of a society meditates on a regular basis, it will be reflected by peaceful behavior.

Yoga Meditation is a wonderful resource for mankind because it can bring the mind to a state of peace with itself. A global society, which has an addiction to multi-tasking, needs time to “unplug” itself, and Yoga meditation offers realistic solutions.

If greatness is achieved by the accumulation of the small things we do on a daily basis then why do we teach our children to be overly cautious? Have them run away from a stranger, instead of helping them? To be careful the world instead of embracing it? Are we letting the few control the masses and at the same time setting our children up to fail? I remember when I was reading about Ted Turner, one of the thing that struck me was the fact that his vision was peace through the flow of information. That is one of the main reasons he came up with a channel that most of us know. That by informing people of what was going on around the world we would get a better understanding of each other, be more tolerant and somewhere in there hopefully he thought we would become more willing to help others.

The answer to the questions above is all the same, fear. We have become so afraid that without realizing it we are installing fears in the hearts of children. When it comes to this the media is little help, in fact it seems like if it can

Upon waking up today I went to check my yahoo inbox for email before which I noticed the news on Omar Bin Laden, son of Osama Bin Laden. Some say Omar Osama bin Laden bears a striking resemblance to his infamous father – except for the dreadlocks that dangle halfway down his back.

Omar is also a bit more stylish, wearing a black leather biker jacket. Though the 26-year-old does not renounce his father, al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden, he has pursued a path of peace with his life.

Omar’s dream is to an “ambassador for peace” between Muslims and the West. Omar shocked the world when he married a 52-year-old British woman named Jane Felix-Browne, who has since taken the name Zaina Alsabah.

Previously married five times, Zaina seems very happy with Omar and desirious of him to move to live with her in England. As for Omar he divorced his wife so he could immigrate to the UK without hindrance as British law does not recognize multiple marriages as is customary in Islamic nations.

The two are planning a 3,000-mile horse race across North Africa to actively pursue global peace, particularly across the treacherous terrorist plagued nations stretching from Cairo to Morocco. The couple welcome others to participate in the ride for peace.

Upon hearing this I immediately began writing to learn more, inquiring of friends in the UK and elsewhere throughout the world. Two days later I received a reponse via email from Zaina and spoke to her the same day by way of phone in Egypt. Zaina expects the event to begin in May this year and last about four months, traveling by horse 50 miles a day.

Items we need to get donated are: water, tents, clothing, horses, veterinarians, doctors, money, four-wheel drive vehicles (just for the event after which they shall be returned), videographers, photographers, airline tickets, and much more.

Zaina told me to buy a horse it in Egypt, it will approximately cost me $4,000 after which if the horse successfully completes the race I can sell the horse and recooperate some of my money.

It is my desire to ride with the Bin Ladens to promote world peace. I trust I shall be able to get all necessary sponsorship to fund this endeavor.

I intend to take a videographer with me to capture this unforgettable journey of peace.

Your prayers and help are much appreciated.

By: Paul Davis

About the Author:

Could we mere lay mortals really make a contribution towards World Peace Now?

Taking some thoughts from the book Peace Within Our Grasp By Crandall R. Kline Jr., August 1999, Crandall suggested that for us to have world peace, humanity need to be activists, writing newspapers and (Government) on the issues relating to war prevention. In other words, we need to be proactive in this world to make things happen. There are views that world peace could be achieved by internalise peace within each individual. I believe in both approaches and they need to go hand in hand.

Why don’t we have peace yet despite the numerous efforts throughout the history on this planet?

In my opinion, wars and fighting have become an accepted part of our lives. Just see the violence portrayed in the movies, tv shows, computer games etc, we are reminded that they are normal things to happen in our lives. These are not natural phenomenon, yet becoming increasingly accepted especially by children who are keen to play games, read books etc.

Our subconscious has been directed towards the idea that violence is normal and is expected even in our society. We need to change that!!!

Secondly, I think we need more compassionate governments around the world. I think only spiritual people should run the governments in order compassionate grounds become the utmost consideration above all, to preserve lives, to be fair and just. Universal humanitarianism is essential to solve global conflicts as Dalai Lama recommend in order to progress towards world peace.

Thirdly, I believe everybody needs to make an effort. I know it may not be possible depending on circumstances. Some people are simply not have the right frame of mind, conditions to do so. But we could all try. Additionally, we need one voice to make it executable. We have different peace organisations working within certain areas but there are no collaboration between peace making organisations.

We need to make one stand against all governments everywhere at the same time!!! Only then we can keep watch on all government, so called elected people to run our demands. We could have a one concerted effort to bring about change we want. We have the people power against the governments should they act against world peace making efforts. I think this solution would bring about conflicts on its own. We do not need that. But there are things though that we could do to help bring about world peace through subconscious minds. Even the people elected for governing the world could be influence we all do.

Solutions for World Peace the Easy Way

The 14th Dalai Lama of Tiber states that no former generation has experienced more constant awareness of fear and tension that we all face today. His holiness contemplates that current climates of fear, war, disasters, man-made or natural ones, would make any sensitive and compassionate person question seriously the progress of our modern world. I believe in agreement with Dalai Lama that compassion is the pillar of world peace. In addition, inner peace is paramount first step towards world peace.

Dalai Lama advocates that we go beyond the attachment type of compassion, for example the ones exist within family, friendship etc. He said that this type of compassion last as long as the attachment goes. He recommends that we need to go beyond that level of compassion towards undiscriminating, spontaneous, and unlimited compassion. How do we achieve this type of compassion? From personal experience, inner light and sound meditation would help us to get in tune with our compassionate nature and bring it forth into our daily lives. For ideas on how to meditate and where to get more information, please visit http://www.holeepassion.com.

World Peace is everybody’s responsibility. Peace can’t be achieved by one man or one organisation or one country. Peace can only be acquired if humanity bands together to demand it. No one person could be acquired, since we are in this together. Everybody uses the same basic requirements for their existence like air, water, food, etc. Compassionate and just solutions to share those basic needs are paramount to world peace. Everybody is at different level of spiritual attainment, although deep within we strive to attain spiritual liberation and understanding. However, we need reminder now and again on how to achieve this.

To raise the peace consciousness, the upper brain must be in control. How do we control it? If you have read the stuff about the Secret, then you would know that what we think would eventually happen in some degree or another. I believe that peace signs, words would encourage us to think more about peace, consciously or subconsciously. I think that this is one of the best way, subtle yet effective for everyone to do. If we have enough people, say a million people wearing peace pendants constantly, bringing peace consciousness and bring to their homes, offices, wherever they go with peace consciousness, they would bring about the chain reaction to their inner circles. It would be a dream to have everybody wears peace signs, words, to signify that world peace is already there and we intend to keep it.

By: Alexson Lee

About the Author:

We are all responsible for world peace and hence our efforts might determine its realisation. I hope you make the right choice and join the efforts, using the easy steps I have pointed out. At the end of the day, we only would feel great that we know we make some efforts to make this world a better place before it is too late.

You know, there is a lot of misunderstanding in the world over religions. Sometimes, I feel that if all religions disappeared and humans realized that less than 25-30 generations separate their genes, that maybe all the issues might change. Although, perhaps the primate politics, territorial conflicts and resource pursuits might still be at issue – can there ever be whirled peas?

It seems that Christians and Jews sometimes misunderstand each other, but that is more with the lower IQ folks or those who have not traveled much or don’t get it? It seems Arabs have been fighting something throughout history, if not bonded by hate for Jews, then bonded by hate against each other – sectarian violence. It always seems with religion there is always a; them vs. us mentality, which I guess picking an enemy to build a team is one of the easiest ways to build, too bad really.

Indeed, I realize that people put a lot of value in religion and believe that the religions could work with their groups to bring peace, yet, it often seems that religion itself is the problem, I guess as an observer of World Religions myself, I just laugh at all the human sound and fury, it is kind of a hoot really, it bemuses me to some degree. I wonder what Henry Kissinger might say about all this? It seems to me that opening dialogue lasts for a while, then it gets undone, only to start again, another conflict or war. I ask do you really believe it is a good expenditure of time?

Is World Peace and Religious Peace in the Middle East really possible?

By: Lance Winslow

About the Author:

I received from Spirit that there will be a “City of Peace” in the land of Israel. I understand the Hopi will help set it up. The question is not “if” but “when”.

This “City of Peace” will be the habitation of those who have chosen to walk in the will of Creator. They will have no religion, but will live in a state of unconditional love, helping each other with an attitude of loving-kindness. Race will not be an issue, and the people living in this city will be known as the “Rainbow Tribe”.

Our current era consists of the time since the Great Flood, the time of Noah. The Israelites during this time period have called God, “the Lord which brought us out of the land of Egypt, out of bondage”. In the future glorious city, those who dwell there will call Creator, “The Lord Our Righteousness”.

Some things were given especially to the fourth world, our current era. These include the Bible, the “Noahide” Laws, the avatar, Jesus, and various religions. These were intended to help mankind rise to a higher level of consciousness.

As we emerge into the fifth world, a new way of life will evolve. It will be one of higher consciousness. Because God will write His Law into our hearts, we will not need to teach each other about Him because everyone will know Him. They will have unconditional love residing in their hearts. This love is Christ. This is the Messiah who will rule the next world.

Today, Creator is gathering His children into communities where they are beginning to live in the way of the fifth world. This way of living is called “Walking the Red Road”.

Many will perish during these difficult times of transition because they choose not to give up materiality and religious rituals. They choose not to know God and walk with Him in personal fellowship. Many choose to worship a man instead of God the Father, possibly because they are afraid.

I understand this future “City of Peace” in the land of Israel will be called the “New Jerusalem” spoken of in the biblical book of Revelation.

By: Dorothy K Daigle

About the Author:

An increasing number of people around the world, have come to the realisation that each of us is all powerful. Each of us has the profound ability to create the life experience we choose. This is not about having control over others, it is about the power to choose and experience peace, love, joy and prosperity in our own personal lives. As with any experience, as an increasing number of people realise and practice this in their lives, the joyous awareness spreads to others. In such an atmosphere, the concept of World Peace is an idea whose time has come.

The World Peace exercise offered in this article, was created by the author in a sudden rush of inspiration on the 7th of November, 2005. As soon as it was publicised, it began gathering supporters around the globe. This is something that each one of us can do. For us to have world peace, there needs to be enough of us that resonate world peace. This is a wonderful start! It is with much joy, that I present to you The World Peace Exercise.

Fill a glass jug or carafe with water – preferably rainwater or bottled water, On a piece of paper the size of a large coaster, write ‘World Peace’ – you can design it as you like with sacred geometry (I use the star of David – two triangles one on top of the other – one turned upside down), Place the coaster on your altar – then the carafe on top of that, Also place on your altar a glass goblet, Every day – meditate for a few minutes, then put your hands around the carafe of water and focus lovingly on world peace, Once you’ve done that, pour a goblet of the water and drink it. Please note that you can put your own phrases into the water instead, personal peace is the start of world peace.

The programming of water has been around for a long time. Water, like glass and quartz is wonderful at taking on the vibrations around it. In more recent times, Dr Masaru Emoto has worked extensively with studying and even photographing the effects of focusing different intentions into water. He has shown that all is needed is to ’show’ the water a picture or words overnight, and the water literally changes form. Dr Emoto travels the world lecturing about his findings.

It is well worth trying this exercise for two weeks, to see for yourself the effect it has on your life.

By: Daniella Breen

About the Author:
