Discover The Canary Island of Lanzarote

Enjoy a holiday with a difference this year and head for the small Canary Island of Lanzarote. Which is home to some great beaches as well as some of the strangest scenery in the world.  Created by volcanic eruptions during the 1730´s and 1840´s.

Lanzarote can be found just off the coast of North West Africa, around four hours flying time from its main tourist markets in Europe, such as the UK and Germany. An is one of seven islands in the Canaries group, which also includes popular destinations like Tenerife and Gran Canaria.  Collectively the archipelago welcomes close to ten million visitors every year – making it the second most visited holiday destination in Spain.

In the UK flights to Lanzarote are at their cheapest for many years, thanks to the fact that more low cost airlines now operate services on this route.  Check out the websites of easyJet and Ryanair for the lowest prices.  With Monarch and Thomas Cook also offering good value returns.  With all flights touching down on the tarmac at the only airport on the island, which is located some 4km outside the capital city of Arrecife.

Lanzarote is a small island, which makes it easy for tourists to transfer to their accommodation.  Playa Blanca at forty minutes drive is the furthest resort away from the airport – whilst Puerto del Carmen is the closest, just ten minutes by road.  These are the two largest resorts on the island and this is where tourists will find most of the hotels and villas in Lanzarote. Along with some excellent beaches and plenty of restaurants.

Of the two, Playa Blanca offers better weather during the winter months and as a result is more popular with tourists at that time of the year.  When many seek to book villas in Playa Blanca for a prolonged stay in order to escape the cold back in the UK.  Playa Blanca also boasts some marvellous beaches and is located fairly close to the Timanfaya National Park.  Epicentre of the eruptions that rocked the island hundreds of years ago.

The island is also home to a host of other natural wonders.  Such as the green lagoon at El Golfo and the Valley of 1000 Palms, which is located in the north of Lanzarote and which has been created by villagers who still plant a palm tree there for every new born baby in the area.
